Recent studies published in Applied Clinical Trials have highlighted the increasing challenges in clinical trial data management due to the growing volume and diversity of clinical data. The average late-stage clinical trial protocol now collects approximately 3.6 million data points, a threefold increase compared to ten years ago. This surge in data complexity has been linked to extended study timelines and efficiencies. This trend is accelerating, creating new challenges for clinical data management.
The study’s respondents identified over twelve electronic data capture solutions, with most organizations using multiple systems. Common pain points included managing mid-study updates, flexibility and customization challenges, database go-live delays, and the high cost of EDC solutions. It also found that managing mid-study updates is time-intensive, requiring about half the time for the initial database to go live. Smaller organizations are faster in early-stage processes, while larger organizations excel in late-stage processes.
